Like an operating system for your life

Vedic astrology is an event-driven model, a bit like a computer's operating system. An operating system has some automatic functions and some user-driven ones. Once started, it takes input from users and runs various programs. We can do many things on top of it, but the operating system remains basic to the computer.

Vedic astrology works the same way. When you are born at a particular point in space and time, you come with an "operating system" that has a lot in common with others' and a lot that is special to you. By applying Vedic astrology principles, you can work out how to make the most of your life's potential. The oldest astrology texts contain more than 20,000 models that can be applied to events in modern life.

How Vedic astrology measures time and space

• The zodiac is divided into 360 degrees: 12 signs of 30 degrees each.

• The same 360 degrees are also divided into 27 constellations (Nakshatras) of 13 degrees 20 minutes each, which gives two and a quarter constellations per sign.

• Each sign can be divided further into 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 24 and 60 parts. The smallest division is 30 minutes of arc (half a degree).

• The 24-hour day and the year are divided in the same way.

So time and space are measured on the same scale. Vedic astrology then places the nine planets (grahas) in these time-space coordinates to understand how time, space and planetary energies interact. A large number of models are built on these combinations, and they help us understand how these forces affect life on this planet.
